SouthernLINC Wireless Vice President Named Chairman of International iDEN™ Operators Forum

ATLANTA – August 28, 2006 – Rodney Johnson, vice president, sales and distribution for SouthernLINC Wireless®, a Southern Company (NYSE: SO), was appointed to chairman of the International iDEN Operators Forum (IiOF). The announcement was made during the group’s annual meeting, which was held on June 28 in Amman, Jordan.

Johnson will serve as chairman for a one-year period. During this time, he will work closely with Motorola to address common member needs with respect to the company’s iDEN (Integrated Digital Enhanced Network) technology.

“Representing this prestigious group of industry-leading professionals is a great honor,” said Johnson. “SouthernLINC Wireless’s handsets are all iDEN-based, which is why it is important for us to be involved with IiOF.”

Several wireless carriers utilizing Motorola’s iDEN technology, such as SouthernLINC Wireless, established the IiOF in 2005. The countries represented by these wireless carriers are: China, El Salvador, Guam, Israel, Jordan, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, South Korea and the United States of America. The IiOF member companies collectively serve more than one million subscribers.

“The IiOF’s goal is to help Motorola move the technology forward to better serve its customers, and to share best practices with each other,” Johnson added.

First introduced in 1994, Motorola's iDEN infrastructure provides wireless solutions designed for a variety of mobile business applications. Today, iDEN wireless handsets are utilized in work environments ranging from manufacturing floors to executive conference rooms. Additionally, SouthernLINC Wireless also sells its iDEN wireless handsets to consumers.
