SouthernLINC Wierless Honors 2006 Southern Heroes
Five individuals recognized for their heroic efforts and outstanding public service

ATLANTA (September 28, 2006) – SouthernLINC Wireless, a Southern Company (NYSE: SO), today announced the five exemplary volunteers who have been named “Southern Heroes.” Founded in 2004, the company’s Southern Heroes program annually recognizes five individuals in the Southeast who are making their communities stronger, safer and more united.

“Southern Heroes has become an integral part of the way SouthernLINC Wireless says ‘thank you’ to our community’s everyday heroes,” said Bob Dawson, CEO and president of SouthernLINC Wireless. “The individuals we are recognizing are involved in important aspects of our community, from helping children to supporting all of us in the wake of tragedies like Hurricane Katrina. We’re honored to associate SouthernLINC Wireless with these outstanding citizens.”

A panel of judges reviewed the nominations and selected five outstanding individuals to spotlight as the 2006 Southern Heroes. They are:

  1. Jerry Morris (Brewton, Ala.); nominated by his son Jeremy Morris. Jerry is an integral member of the Escambia Search Dog Association which helps search for missing individuals.
  2. Steve Orel (Birmingham, Ala.); nominated by Birmingham City Councilor Valerie Abbott. Steve is an education advocate and founder of the World of Opportunity.
  3. Jena Sims (Winder, Ga.); nominated by Sarah Corrigan and Buddy Hardigree. Jena is a former pageant contestant who now hosts beauty pageants for children with cancer.
  4. Chaplain (CPT) James D. Thornton (Petal, Miss.); nominated by his wife Kathy Thornton. A member of the Mississippi State Guard during Hurricane Katrina, he was instrumental in setting up an emergency program enabling displaced veterans access for to their medications.
  5. John Winfree (Pensacola, Fla.); nominated by co-worker Sherry Swilley-Nall. John volunteered his time to work with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to develop CART - Child Abduction Response Team. He is also active with the KlaasKids Foundation, which is dedicated to stopping crimes against children.

The company will recognize the five Southern Heroes by sponsoring a celebration and recognition ceremony in their hometowns this fall. SouthernLINC Wireless will further the heroes’ efforts by contributing $2,000 to the non-profit organization or charity of each hero’s choice – which is double the amount contributed in past years.

The Southern Heroes program is designed to recognize outstanding citizens throughout the Southeast for their efforts in helping to build stronger communities.
