SouthernLINC Wierless Honors 2006 Southern Heroes
Five individuals recognized for their heroic efforts and outstanding
public service
ATLANTA (September 28, 2006) – SouthernLINC Wireless,
a Southern Company (NYSE: SO), today announced the five exemplary
volunteers who have been named “Southern Heroes.”
Founded in 2004, the company’s Southern Heroes program
annually recognizes five individuals in the Southeast who
are making their communities stronger, safer and more united.
“Southern Heroes has become an integral part of the
way SouthernLINC Wireless says ‘thank you’ to
our community’s everyday heroes,” said Bob Dawson,
CEO and president of SouthernLINC Wireless. “The individuals
we are recognizing are involved in important aspects of our
community, from helping children to supporting all of us in
the wake of tragedies like Hurricane Katrina. We’re
honored to associate SouthernLINC Wireless with these outstanding
citizens.”
A panel of judges reviewed the nominations and selected five
outstanding individuals to spotlight as the 2006 Southern
Heroes. They are:
- Jerry Morris (Brewton, Ala.); nominated by his son Jeremy
Morris. Jerry is an integral member of the Escambia Search
Dog Association which helps search for missing individuals.
- Steve Orel (Birmingham, Ala.); nominated by Birmingham
City Councilor Valerie Abbott. Steve is an education advocate
and founder of the World of Opportunity.
- Jena Sims (Winder, Ga.); nominated by Sarah Corrigan and
Buddy Hardigree. Jena is a former pageant contestant who now
hosts beauty pageants for children with cancer.
- Chaplain (CPT) James D. Thornton (Petal, Miss.); nominated
by his wife Kathy Thornton. A member of the Mississippi State
Guard during Hurricane Katrina, he was instrumental in setting
up an emergency program enabling displaced veterans access
for to their medications.
- John Winfree (Pensacola, Fla.); nominated by co-worker
Sherry Swilley-Nall. John volunteered his time to work with
the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to develop CART
- Child Abduction Response Team. He is also active with the
KlaasKids Foundation, which is dedicated to stopping crimes
against children.
The company will recognize the five Southern Heroes by sponsoring
a celebration and recognition ceremony in their hometowns
this fall. SouthernLINC Wireless will further the heroes’
efforts by contributing $2,000 to the non-profit organization
or charity of each hero’s choice – which is double
the amount contributed in past years.
The Southern Heroes program is designed to recognize outstanding
citizens throughout the Southeast for their efforts in helping
to build stronger communities.
